Report to : Protection Team Leader
Overall purpose of the role:
The Protection Monitoring Officer is a key member of DRC’s Protection team, responsible for leading and implementing protection monitoring activities in Sittwe Township and surrounding project locations. Under the direct supervision of the Protection Team Leader, the officer conducts regular field visits to assess protection risks, document human rights concerns, and provide timely and evidence-based analysis to inform programming and advocacy efforts.
The role requires strong engagement with affected communities, relevant stakeholders, and humanitarian actors to ensure protection concerns are effectively identified, reported, and addressed. The Protection Monitoring Officer is expected to uphold protection principles, confidentiality standards, and DRC policies while ensuring a survivor-centered approach in all interactions.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct regular protection monitoring visits to project locations, collecting data on protection risks, human rights concerns, and humanitarian needs.
- Identify and document protection concerns through key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and direct observation; and update on PIMs weekly/ monthly basis
- Analyze and report trends in protection risks to inform evidence-based programming and advocacy efforts.
- Ensure timely and accurate data collection, entry, and reporting, maintaining confidentiality and protection principles.
- Support the development of protection monitoring reports, briefing notes, and situation analyses based on field findings.
- Coordinate with community members, local authorities, and humanitarian actors to strengthen response mechanisms.
- Refer individuals with urgent protection needs to appropriate services and follow up to ensure assistance.
- Conduct awareness sessions with communities on protection risks, rights, and available services.
- Ensure all activities adhere to international protection standards, DRC policies, and confidentiality principles.
- Contribute to the design and improvement of protection monitoring tools and methodologies.
- Support capacity-building initiatives for community members and partners on protection-related topics.
- Provide regular updates to the Protection Team Leader and actively participate in team meetings and coordination forums.
- Prepare internal weekly/monthly protection reports/trackers in English to be submitted to the Protection Team Leader; these reports should summarize protection monitoring activities carried out by the Protection teams and underline key weekly findings.
- Regularly liaise with the DRC Information Management Officer and ensure the keeping accurate management of data records and trackers.
- Actively participate in weekly/ monthly team meetings and other camp level meetings assigned by line manager
- Ensure the safety and confidentiality of the information collected in accordance with the DRC Code of Conduct and instructions from the supervisor.
- Any other duties related to the nature of job and context as requested by line manager
Experience and technical competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in social science, Social Work, Public Health, or related disciplines. Preferred Training certificates related to protection, protection monitoring, basic principles and guidelines, child protection, human rights.
- Minimum two years of experience in protection monitoring, humanitarian response, or human rights work, preferably in displacement or conflict-affected settings.
- Strong understanding of protection principles, human rights frameworks, and humanitarian standards (e.g., Sphere, IASC, Do No Harm, survivor-centered approach).
- Experience in conducting assessments, interviews, and focus group discussions with affected communities.
- Proven ability to analyze protection risks, identify trends, and produce clear reports to inform programming and advocacy.
- Knowledge of referral mechanisms and experience in safely referring individuals with protection needs.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including community members, local authorities, and humanitarian actors.
- Ability to work independently in challenging field environments, demonstrating flexibility, resilience, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent data collection and documentation skills, including experience with digital tools for survey and report writing.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and experience with data management systems is an asset.
- Fluency in English.
- Other local language us considered as an asset.

Conditions
Contract: DRC will offer the successful applicant a DRC’s Regular contract including 3-month probation. Renewable depends on both funding and performance. Salary and conditions will be in accordance with DRC’s Terms of Employment. The position is placed in Employment Band H - non management.
The position requires candidates who can work and base in Sittwe.
