From Silence to Independence: Afaf's Journey to Reclaim Her Dignity

 Afaf’s life began to change when she joined a rural women’s empowerment project supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) and implemented by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) with local partners. Through psychosocial support sessions and literacy classes, she found a safe space where she could share her experiences and rebuild her confidence. 

Over time, Afaf began to rediscover her abilities. During group sessions, she spoke about her long-hidden talent for sewing. Through advocacy efforts and internal DRC referrals from the protection team, Afaf secured the necessary funds to acquire her own sewing machine. This opportunity allowed her to transform her skill into an income source, helping cover her mother’s medical expenses. 

The project also provided legal assistance, enabling Afaf to obtain a national identity card for the first time in her life. This essential document now ensures she can access food and cash assistance, overcoming the obstacles that previously left her without resources. Through literacy, numeracy, and life-skills training, she learned to read medicine labels and sign her own name—milestones that significantly strengthened her sense of independence. 

Today, Afaf sits in her modest home surrounded by colorful fabrics and a notebook where she practices writing letters. The women’s center has not only improved her emotional well-being but also her physical health.  “ By regularly attending the women’s center, participating in activities, and expressing my stress, my health improved noticeably. My breathing became better, and I no longer need to use my inhaler as before.”,  Afaf expresses.
