NGOs urge Kenya to reconsider intended closure of refugee camps

On May 6th, the Government of Kenya announced its intentions to close Dadaab and Kakuma refugee camps as well as the Department of Refugee Affairs (DRA). A number of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), including the Danish Refugee Council, urge the Kenyan government to reconsider its decision, due to the very dire humanitarian consequences it will have for the country’s refugees.

The NGOs working on providing assistance to refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya acknowledge the hospitality and responsibility that the Government of Kenya has borne over decades. However, the organisations want to underline that they are committed to continue supporting the Government of Kenya in the search for long-term and sustainable solutions for refugees.
