Refugees flee from war, conflict, and persecution. They leave their home countries where they are persecuted, denied their basic human rights, or where their life may be threatened. As of 2020, the UNHCR reported that that two thirds (68%) of the world’s refugees come from just five countries:

  • Syria (6.7 million),
  • Venezuela (4 million),
  • Afghanistan (2.6 million),
  • South Sudan (2.2 million), and
  • Myanmar (1.1 million).
