Members of the DRC Stand-by Member Roster are offered a number of training opportunities, which are described below and can be found in MyPages.

Human resources are the most valuable resource of an organisation, and its effectiveness depends on the competences of its employees. This is also true for the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Stand-by Roster. We are only as good as our deployees; hence in order to increase the impact of our deployments and deployee's performance, capacity development is valued very highly.

In addition to the positive impact on deployments, training and capacity development also fosters greater loyalty among employees, as they feel their growth is valued. This in turn improves our retention rate, making it possible for the DRC Stand-by Roster to build and make use of high performance members who know the procedures and whom we know well.

All our active members have access to a range of general as well as thematic trainings, which provide opportunities for personal and professional development. We offer in-house induction training, while the majority of the training opportunities are available through our United Nations partners.

In addition to training courses, we strongly recommend that members take responsibility for self-learning through e-learning programs and we offer access to a variety of networks and on-line trainings.

In-house Trainings

The Danish Refugee Council facilitates in-house trainings such as Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT) and the Stand-by Roster facilitates an Induction Training, which is mandatory for all new members. The trainings are described below. Members can nominate themselves to the trainings in MyPages.

Induction course for new members

All new members of the DRC Stand-by Roster are required to attend the induction training, preferably before they are deployed on their first mission. In some instances, members may be deployed before they attend the training and are invited to take the course after the assignment has ended.

The primary objective of the training is to ensure that every member of the DRC Roster has the required knowledge and capacity to perform successfully as a deployee in a UN emergency operation. The secondary overall objectives are to assess the strengths and potentials of each roster member and to build a DRC Roster-community.

The mandatory four-day introduction aims at improving the knowledge and understanding of the UN system, missions and mandates, UN humanitarian operations, the DRC as a global humanitarian organisation, team work, protection, how the roster operates, stress management, code of conduct and humanitarian dilemmas, as well as a full day of synthesis exercising. It also includes the first-aid training and covers some aspects of the Information Management (IM) and Protection from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation(PSEA).

The DRC Stand-by Roster Induction Training takes place twice a year in Denmark.

Hostile Environment Awareness Training (HEAT)

Members without significant exposure to or previous training in, safety and security will be offered participation at DRC’s HEAT training.

UN Trainings

Every year the DRC Stand-by Roster supports a minimum of 50 members in their efforts to become even more qualified to do their job. In the member site of the DRC Stand-by Roster, MyPages, members can see the full list of UN trainings on offer. The list is updated regularly, however it might not be complete as new trainings are constantly being developed and others discontinued. All members are encouraged to express their interest in a type of training or in a specific training event. Expressing an interest does not automatically lead to training participation, as DRC will usually nominate only a few candidates for each training based on their availability for deployment, level of activeness on the roster, competences needed in the roster, as well as available funding. The UN training organizers will make the final selection of participants.
