Now officially registered with the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection as a Self-Help Group (SHG), the members contribute to a shared savings pool each week. This initiative fosters unity, accountability, and financial resilience, offering loans for emergencies and essential needs. With every contribution, they are not just saving money, they are securing their future.
With support from the Danish Refugee Council’s Supporting Displacement-Affected Communities in Kenya with Entrepreneurship Development (SDACKED) project, these young men have transformed their lives. Funded by the Swedish government, SDACKED is a four-year initiative designed to build an inclusive entrepreneurship ecosystem in Kenya, ensuring greater financial inclusion and economic participation for refugees and host communities.
Through SDACKED, Champions of Change received training in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, leadership, and conflict management. They also benefited from mentorship, coaching, psychosocial support, and financial linkages to KCB Bank. Additionally, the project facilitated access to essential documentation, such as refugee ID cards and KRA PINs, critical steps toward opening bank accounts and gaining financial independence.
Today, Champions of Change operates a public toilet business with space provided by Nairobi City County. Once homeless and hopeless, these young men now earn a stable income, afford daily meals, and have a place to call home. Their journey proves that with determination, external support, and community empowerment, transformation is possible.
From struggle to success, this is the power of change.
