Emergency Response to the Displacement in Dar'a

Hussein, 35 years old, is from the Al-Tha’lah area in Sweida governorate. He is married and has seven children, ages 2 to 15. Due to safety concerns, Hussein and his family left their residence in As-Sweida. As the security situation deteriorated, Hussein feared for his children’s lives and had no other option but to leave. The family lives in a tent in Al-Maliha Al-Gharbiya, Dar’a governorate, and faces a harsh reality

“The tent doesn’t provide enough protection, especially during cold weather. We lack proper heating, a stable income, and sufficient resources. Life in the tent is particularly hard for the children and for my wife,”

Amid the challenges the family is facing, the assistance provided by DRC, with the support of the European Union, helped Hussein meet some of the family’s basic needs through the provision of hygiene kits, a dignity kit, blankets, and a solar-powered flashlight. These items have provided some relief, as the family lacked access to basic hygiene supplies, did not have enough blankets to protect the children from the cold temperatures, and found the tent completely dark and unsafe at night. The assistance has also supported Hussein’s wife’s needs and ensured her dignity

Without the provided assistance, Hussein’s family would have faced poor hygiene conditions and increasing health risks, especially for the children. The cold weather would also have been harsher without blankets, and the darkness at night would have made life more dangerous and stressful.

While the assistance is well appreciated and meets the family’s needs, the family and other displaced families need more support, especially for winterization, shelter improvement, and livelihoods. “If further assistance or opportunities become available, it could help us move towards stability and self-reliance” said Hussein.
