Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a leading protection agency with a mandate to protect, advocate and promote durable solutions for displacement affected populations.

DRC has been operating in Ukraine since 2014, currently DRC employs over 800 staff in Ukraine and implements emergency response in the Protection, Livelihoods, Shelter/NFIs and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (humanitarian mine action) sectors, using direct interventions, support to duty bearers and civil society organizations (CSOs), and partnerships with CSOs. DRC will continue and adapt its durable solutions portfolio to the evolving context.

DRC is currently looking for a Communication Officer in Kyiv.  

About the job

Promote DRC’s mission, programmes and advocacy priorities in Ukraine by working with programme teams to communicate with key audiences, including affected communities, donors and partners. The Communications Officer supports implementation of the country communications strategy, ensuring compliance with DRC procedures, branding standards and donor visibility requirements.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Maintain and improve communication processes, including monitoring tools, templates and standard operating procedures.
  • Develop and produce communication materials, including social media content, human interest stories, interviews, multimedia materials and publications.
  • Prepare and manage the quarterly DRC Ukraine newsletter, including drafting content, coordinating inputs from programme teams and managing distribution through Mailchimp.
  • Ensure regular updates of DRC Ukraine digital platforms, including the website and social media channels.
  • Support implementation of project communication and visibility plans, ensuring compliance with donor communication and visibility requirements.
  • Coordinate external communication service providers such as photographers, videographers, designers and translators, including preparation of Terms of Reference (ToR) and technical briefs.
  • Develop technical specifications for the production of communication and visibility materials, including printed products.
  •  Maintain and update a structured archive of photos, videos and other visibility materials.
  • Support media engagement, internal and external events, and capacity development of field teams on communication tools and visibility requirements.

About you

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have at least 2 years of professional experience in communications, media, public relations, or advocacy. Experience in an INGO or civil society organisation is required. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, advocacy or a related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to produce clear, engaging communication materials for different audiences in English and Ukrainian.
  • Proven experience developing communication content, including social media posts, human interest stories, interviews, articles and other narrative products.
  • Proven experience preparing Terms of Reference (ToR), technical briefs and assignments for external service providers such as photographers, videographers, designers, printers and other communication contractors; Ability to develop technical specifications for visibility and communication materials, including printed products such as brochures, banners and roll-ups.
  • Experience ensuring compliance with donor communication and visibility requirements. Knowledge of guidelines of institutional donors such as the European Union, Danish MFA, SDC, SIDA, GFFO or similar donors.
  • Experience preparing and managing newsletters and mailing campaigns using Mailchimp or similar platforms.
  • Practical experience using Canva, Adobe Photoshop or other graphic editing tools, including editing existing layouts and visual templates.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to coordinate multiple communication tasks, deadlines and service providers simultaneously.

Desirable

  • Experience working with video content, including script development and basic editing.
  • A portfolio of published work (articles, stories, social media campaigns or multimedia materials).

We offer

  • Contract length: after 3 months' probation period of 6-months renewable depending on funding.
  • Band: H – nonmanagement.
  • Designation of Duty Station: Kyiv.
  • Start date: As soon as possible.

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for employees on national contracts.
