The challenge: a high vulnerability to climate change

Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to climate change, facing frequent disasters like cyclones, floods, and salinity intrusion. Coastal communities, among the country's poorest, are losing lands and livelihoods, leading to inward migration. Khulna district, in particular, is severely affected by natural disasters and climatic stresses, impacting the lives of its predominantly poor population. The district heavily relies on the Sundarban's natural resources for sustenance, causing social conflicts and heightened risks for women and girls. Lack of access to clean drinking water leads to protection risks and the spread of waterborne diseases, with communities resorting to untreated pond water.

Climate-smart solutions

The project aims to achieve significant achievements and generate positive impacts while aligning with local needs. Anticipated key achievements include conducting a detailed assessment of climate vulnerabilities, adaptation mechanisms, mitigation measures, and the specific needs of men, women, boys, and girls. Based on the assessment findings, a climate risk adaptation project will be designed and piloted in the Khulna districts of Bangladesh.

Key interventions will focus on finding solutions for the drinking water problem through rainwater harvesting, storage, water treatment, and awareness raising on safe water handling. The project will also support alternative climate-smart and green livelihoods, providing sustainable income-generating activities. Community capacity building on climate change adaptation will empower individuals and communities with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively.

The project seeks to ensure improved access to clean drinking water, enhanced livelihood opportunities, increased resilience, and community preparedness for climate change impacts.
