Launch of the Global Displacement Forecast Report 2024

According to the model, the total number of people displaced globally is forecasted to increase by 3.7 million in 2024 and an additional 3.1 million in 2025 entailing a total increase of 6.8 million.

The report explores current trends related to the deterioration in the conditions driving displacement including a spike in violence against civilians and environmental hazards. 2023 saw a significant increase in the number of incidents of violence against civilians. Funding levels to solve crises and its impacts have slumped - crisis-affected countries have seen severe cuts in development assistance, peacebuilding and humanitarian funding.

The report further shows how violations of IHL can lead to increased displacement and also influence on displacement dynamics. When warring parties deliberately target civilians it increases the total number of displaced people. When warring parties target health facilities or humanitarian access becomes constrained it increases displacement across borders.
