Press Release: In 2022 DRC reached more than 19 million people with crucial assistance
World Refugee Day this year is once again marked by the highest record of people forced to flee, now reaching 108 million worldwide. With a turnover of EUR 423 million the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) reached more than 19 million people throughout 2022, according to its newly published annual report.
A continued war in Ukraine, a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, devastating droughts in the Horn of Africa and recently the loss of hundreds of lives on the Mediterranean Sea, as a boat capsized, emphasizes the extreme importance of DRC’s continued work with displaced people around the globe.
"Our staff works relentlessly to provide help to refugees and often under extremely difficult circumstances. With the continued high number of people displaced, our work with peacebuilding efforts, ensuring shelter, managing camps, supporting access to livelihoods, and advocating for refugees right to protection, remains imperative," says General Secretary Charlotte Slente.
In 2022, several new crises emerged, while Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia saw the most devastating drought in recent decades bringing hunger to millions of people, other areas such as Bangladesh and South Sudan were plagued by heavy floods. Whereas the situation in Afghanistan further deteriorated, with decades of war, instability and climate change leaving half the population in dire need of humanitarian assistance.
DRC, as the world’s leading displacement-oriented organization with 8,000 staff in more than 40 countries, is present in these regions and continue to provide crucial help – whether it is delivering acute emergency aid including food, water, shelter or hygiene kits for people who have lost everything in Bangladesh, Kenya and Afghanistan, providing mine risk education to over two million people affected by war in Ukraine, or ensuring legal aid and integration in Denmark.
Looking ahead towards 2025 DRC has launched a strategy to support local capacities to ensure our presence complement and reinforce, rather than replace national and local initiatives. In Yemen DRC have provided support for 23 national NGOs, as well as coached and funded local civil society organizations in hard-to-reach areas in the Sahel region.
With this strategy DRC aims at helping more people in hard-to-reach regions, creating sustainable solutions, and ensuring our help is where it is most needed by collaborating with national- and local capacities.
