Sudan: communal kitchens deliver meals to hundreds of households
As Sudan enters the fourth year of conflict, food insecurity continues to affect thousands of families, particularly in displacement-affected areas such as Um Dukhun in Central Darfur.
Through partnership with DRC, Mutual Aid Groups in Um Dukhun has been implementing community-based responses to address urgent needs. One such intervention is the establishment of communal kitchens.
The initiative targeted hundreds of vulnerable households, including internally displaced persons and at-risk families within host communities. Across all rounds, the project reached an estimated 22,000 individuals, providing ready-to-eat meals.
The communal kitchens contributed to improving access to daily meals for displaced and vulnerable families, reducing risk of malnutrition and easing the economic burden on households.
The intervention played a critical role in supporting families who are struggling to meet their basic food needs

This effort reflects the importance of locally led emergency responses in reaching communities quickly and effectively. Local actors, such as emergency rooms, remain at the forefront of delivering lifesaving assistance in hard-to-reach and high-need areas.
As the conflict continues, food insecurity and humanitarian needs are expected to rise. Sustained support to community-based initiatives remains essential to ensure that vulnerable families can access basic services and maintain a minimum level of dignity.
Strengthening partnerships with local responders and scaling up such interventions is critical while continued efforts toward ending the conflict remain essential to addressing the root causes of this crisis.
