The DRC Gender Based Violence and Child Protection Deployment Scheme
The DRC Gender‑Based Violence (GBV) and Child Protection (CP) Deployment Scheme deploys specialized protection experts to emergencies based on UNHCR’s priority needs. Deployees are part of a static DRC team and embedded within UNHCR operations to provide timely, high‑quality, and sustainable protection support.
About the DRC Gender Based Violence and Child Protection Deployment Scheme
Since 2024, DRC has managed a team of roving Gender‑Based Violence (GBV) and Child Protection (CP) Experts who support UNHCR operations in emergency and protracted displacement settings. The scheme provides rapid, specialized protection expertise to strengthen GBV and child protection systems where needs are most acute.
GBV Experts reinforce GBV prevention, response, and risk mitigation by improving referral pathways, building partner capacity, and strengthening coordination mechanisms. They update SOPs, mainstream GBV across sectors, develop IEC materials, and support community awareness efforts. Their work also includes enhancing case management systems, conducting monitoring and safety assessments, and providing technical guidance to advance policy and localization initiatives. Deployments last approximately six months.
Child Protection Experts support the transition of child protection services to national and community‑based systems. They map existing interventions, develop transition plans, and strengthen the capacity of UNHCR staff, partners, and government counterparts. CP Experts provide cross‑sector technical guidance, introduce innovative approaches, and document lessons learned to promote coordinated, sustainable child protection responses. Deployments last approximately three months.
Recruitment for the GVB and CP Deployment Scheme
Requesting a DRC GVB and CP Roster Expert
During a humanitarian response, UNHCR country operations need to quickly augment their human resources on the ground. Requesting experts through their standby partners is one mechanism that complements their own internal surge capacities.
Procedures for requesting deployments from the GBV and CP scheme are based on the conditions made in the individual grant agreements, hence all needs and requests should be made through the respective focal points at UNHCR Copenhagen.
