AHEAD Learning Series
Through a series of targeted capacity-strengthening activities, DEMAC supports diaspora organizations and their local partners in shifting from reactive response to proactive, preparedness-focused engagement, enabling their long-term inclusion in AA frameworks. The AHEAD Learning Series provides a structured platform for training, dialogue, collaboration, and peer exchange.
Executive summary
The AHEAD Learning Series began with a two-and-a-half-day workshop, held in November 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya, that brought together 27 diaspora organizations and their local partners across the East Africa and Great Lakes (EAGL) region. Through expert presentations, targeted training, practical exercises, and group discussions, participants explored key concepts of AA, diaspora–local partnerships in AA, and resource mobilization for AA. The objective was to build a shared understanding of anticipatory action, enhance participants’ access to AHEAD forecasting models and tools, and strengthen their capacity to apply these within AA frameworks.
Building on this foundation, the second workshop took place in Nairobi in May 2026, where partners gathered to identify concrete entry points for moving beyond traditional emergency response towards anticipatory action.
In September 2026, participants met for a two-day workshop in Mogadishu, Somalia to co-design and validate an anticipatory action plan (AAP). Diaspora organizations and local partners, SODMA, the NGO Coalition, DRC worked through scenario-based simulations in their actual roles to test and refine the alert-to-action chain, unpacking how to effectively translate the AAP into timely, protection-centered and operationally feasible action under realistic conflict conditions.
