From Lack of Services to a Safe Environment: Shoei’s Story
With funding from the European Union, NMO, in partnership with DRC, rehabilitated damaged latrines and repaired solar-powered lights across three displacement sites—Al-Kadah Al-Asfal, and Al Wa'arah village—creating a safer, healthier, and more dignified environment for 326 displaced people. These improvements reduced health risks while enhancing safety and privacy, particularly for women and children.
Shoei, 50, who was displaced from At-Tuhayta District to Al Wa'arah village site in Al-Khukhah, describes what life was like before the intervention: "The damaged latrines forced my family, especially women and children, to walk to open, distant areas in the dark, which caused us fear and embarrassment. Today, after the maintenance, we have regained our comfort and safety. This intervention did not just fix walls; it restored our dignity."
Beyond improving health conditions and reducing the risk of disease, the intervention strengthened protection by providing women and children with greater privacy and a safer environment within the displacement site.
