How EU-Supported Partnerships Are Improving the Lives of Displaced People in Al-Khukhah

In Yemen’s complex displacement environment, localizing humanitarian work is essential for a sustainable response. With support from the European Union and as part of the Yemen Displacement Response (YDR) Consortium, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has strengthened its local partnerships. As part of this effort, DRC partnered with the Nahda Makers Organization (NMO) to manage and coordinate camps across four sites in Al-Khukhah District, Hodeidah Governorate.

Integration and Localization: Strengthening Impact on the Ground

This cooperation provided a valuable opportunity to share expertise and institutional practices. Alaa, DRC’s Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) Sector Manager, explains:

"The partnership with NMO combines international standards with local knowledge, enabling us to make better use of resources while delivering a more sustainable response. Through this mutual learning process, we helped strengthen the technical and institutional capacities of NMO, while gaining a deeper understanding of local dynamics and flexible coping mechanisms on the ground."

Ahlam, DRC’s Partnerships and Localization Officer, adds:

"Working closely with NMO allowed us to build on each other’s strengths. While we shared institutional tools and best practices, we also gained valuable insights into the local context, making our response more relevant and effective."

From Lack of Services to a Safe Environment: Shoei’s Story

With funding from the European Union, NMO, in partnership with DRC, rehabilitated damaged latrines and repaired solar-powered lights across three displacement sites—Al-Kadah Al-Asfal, and Al Wa'arah village—creating a safer, healthier, and more dignified environment for 326 displaced people. These improvements reduced health risks while enhancing safety and privacy, particularly for women and children.

Shoei, 50, who was displaced from At-Tuhayta District to Al Wa'arah village site in Al-Khukhah, describes what life was like before the intervention: "The damaged latrines forced my family, especially women and children, to walk to open, distant areas in the dark, which caused us fear and embarrassment. Today, after the maintenance, we have regained our comfort and safety. This intervention did not just fix walls; it restored our dignity."

Beyond improving health conditions and reducing the risk of disease, the intervention strengthened protection by providing women and children with greater privacy and a safer environment within the displacement site.

A Future Vision for Sustainable Partnership

The partnership between DRC and NMO demonstrated how combining international support with local expertise can deliver practical, sustainable improvements for displaced communities.

The cooperation with DRC was characterized by stability and a mutual commitment to the project goals, ensuring smooth implementation. We see real added value in this partnership and look forward to strengthening and expanding this coordination in the future.

Supported by the European Union through the YDR consortium, DRC continues to strengthen localization by partnering with national organizations across Yemen. Alongside its partnership with NMO in Al-Khukhah, DRC also works with the Yemen Family Care Association (YFCA) to manage displacement sites in Abs District, Hajjah.  Together, these partnerships demonstrate how international support and local expertise can be combined to deliver more effective and sustainable assistance for displaced families.
