Statement on the attack of the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza: Civilians should never be a target of conflict

Hundreds of people have lost their lives while receiving medical treatment in the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza, where thousands of civilians had also sought shelter. Civilians should never be a target of conflict.

The scenes following the attack on the Al Ahli hospital in Gaza last night [Tuesday 17 October] are truly shocking. According to International Humanitarian Law (IHL), civilians and civilian infrastructure must never be a target of conflict. Hundreds of people have lost their lives while receiving medical treatment in the hospital, where thousands of civilians had also sought shelter.

All potential violations of International Humanitarian Law must be investigated and those found responsible must be held to account.

There is an urgent need for a ceasefire, the entry of essential humanitarian supplies into Gaza – including food, water, medicines, and fuel – to ensure that no more innocent civilian lives are lost.
