Joint INGO Statement: Killing of Wesam Qaid, SFD

We, the undersigned humanitarian and development organizations, are deeply shocked and saddened by the killing of Wesam Qaid, Acting Executive Director of the Social Fund for Development (SFD). Wesam was abducted on 3 May and subsequently found dead in Aden.

Wesam was a respected Yemeni development leader who dedicated his life to improving the livelihoods of vulnerable communities. Through his leadership of the Small and Micro Enterprise Promotion Service (SMEPS), which he founded, and his role at the Social Fund for Development, he contributed significantly to inclusive economic development across Yemen.

We unequivocally condemn this killing and call for a prompt, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death to ensure accountability in accordance with the law.

We are deeply concerned by the broader risks faced by humanitarian and development personnel. Violence against those working to assist communities in need is unacceptable and undermines efforts to alleviate suffering. We call on all parties and relevant authorities to ensure the safety, security, and protection of all workers, in line with international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

This tragic incident underscores the serious challenges facing those serving communities in Yemen and highlights the urgent need to strengthen the protection environment.

We extend our deepest condolences to Wesam’s family, his colleagues at SFD, and all those who had the privilege of working alongside him. His contributions to the people of Yemen will be remembered.
